You’ve known each other twelve years,”
\nsighs Julia. “It must be romantic
\nto dance together.” “He’s not
\nromantic,” my wife says, “sometimes
\nwe fight on stage.” “But you met
\ndancing,” Julia says. She fills my wife’s
\nglass, spills wine
\non the tablecloth. “I hired him
\nto teach me tango.” And I add,
\n“We’ve been dancing together
\nsince.” Julia touches my arm
\nwith her hand, “You started dancing…?”
\n“After college. I liked
\nthe girls.” Julia’s red hair
\nis wispy and jumps about in long
\ncurls. Her eyes are green, and her throat
\ndives like an arrow
\ninto her teal silk blouse.
\nI consider launching into
\na short monologue about when I saw ballet
\non TV at twelve; wanting to touch the women
\nall those places
\nas a job.
\n“It’s so gorgeous,
\nit must be wonderful to be able to
\ndo that. We should go dancing
\nsometime.” My wife lifts her wine glass,
\nand I know we never will.<\/p>\n
